Powerbook purchase - does where I purchase matter?

Hello,
I will be purchasing a new powerbook in a few days.
My question is this: what difference does it make, if any, if I purchase the powerbook from an Apple Store, Apple on line, or an Apple retailer (apple authorized reseller)? In order of lowest to highest price are:
1. Apple retailer -- $150 rebate (free shipping & no tax)
2. Apple on line -- education discount plus coupon
3. Apple Store -- education discout but no coupon
I have been reading the threads here -- am I correct in understanding that I will get more service if I encounter problems if I have purchased the powerbook directly from an Apple store?
My budget is tight, but I am new to mac (an experienced windows user). I will be using software to transfer my files and doubt I will need assistance, but should I find something wrong with the powerbook, I'd like to resolve the issue(s) as simply as possible, even if it means spending a bit more at the onset. Oh, and yes, I will be purchasing Applecare.
Thanks in advance,
LJW

Main difference seems to be return policy and flexibility - Some people have said Amazon have a generous return policy, and Apple allow you 14 days or so - some other retailers don't, but repairs etc are still handled by Apple and Applecare, so after the first 14 days it's a moot point.
You could try calling the Apple Store and seeing if they'll do a price match with the retailer. Also, if you determine that return policy is the only difference, check with your credit card company - as they often offer extra protection to consumers that most people don't realise.
Welcome to the Apple Club, you'll really enjoy it. BUT - take a good hour or so to work out how it works and what the structure of OSX is - it will save you a lot of frustration later if you learn how it works at the start - file structure and the way applications are "installed" are the two biggest differences (much better) - ask here for advice. If you get to a point where you think something is worse than windows, check here, you may just be making a mistake.
Anyway, best of luck.

Does the account type matter when using the Advanced Options row suppression?
The report will suppress all the 0 rows if the suppression is based on a column with a Planning acct type "Revenue", but it doesn't do anything if the suppression is based on a column with a Planning acct type "saved assumption."
Just wondering if this is why I can't get the report to suppress the rows. Everything else seems to be the same in the report.
Thanks in advance for any assistance on this.

Can you tell us how your Conditional Suppression is set up? If this report consists of account types Revenue and Saved Assumption only, and your conditional suppression works just on Revenue account types, you can insert a second condition for the Saved Assumption account types.
Let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions.

  • Does the usb compatibility matter?

Can you use a controller that is usb PC compatible on mac? Does the usb compatibility matter?

Note, Macs with Classic operating system may require an entirely different game controller.
Here's one that works with the older operating systems:
    http://www.amazon.com/ISHOCK-GAMEPAD-IMAC-FORCE-FEEDBACK/dp/B000YL9A1A
Boot Camp is not available for Classic operating system capable machines.  We need to know are you running a pre-2006 Mac, and preferably a pre-2003 Mac if you are going to use game controllers on Mac OS 9 or earlier.  Many won't work in Classic environment but will work with Mac OS 9 booting.  pre-2003 Macs have Mac OS 9 booting.
Since you posted to the Classic environment forum, do you need access to Mac OS 9 games on a Mac OS 9 boot, or in the Classic environment?  If in neither, please tell us which version of Mac OS X you need, and for which Mac model.   Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to determine if it is G3, G4, G5, or Intel.

powerbook g4 - does not start up...it shows kernel panic screen...how do i fix/resolve this problem?

In the overwhelming majority of cases, kernel panic indicates a severe hardware problem. Braby and Allan pointed to useful things. If you can boot from CD / DVD and reinstall without any kernel panic, then may be a software problem, but this is less probable. You must check, anyway.
If you have a 2nd mac around and a firewire cable, you may try to restart the ill mac in target mode and connect it to a healthy mac to see whether it may be used in target mode.

  • Powerbook purchased in 2003 has no airport card?

The manual says my powerbook is equipped with AirPort Extreme wireless technology, but system profiler says, "no information found" about the AirPort card.
I never tried to connect to a wireless lan until I tried today and nothing happened – no automatic hook-up.
What's up? I have the "technology," but no card? Is this right? Do I need to purchase a card now?
    Any suggestions?

OK, I looked under the battery and there's a serial number posted there for an airport extreme card.
I never had a need to try to use the airport card since I purchased the computer and now that I have tried it, it's pretty distressing to find that it is either broken, loose or was never installed.
As much as I love Apple computers, this really doesn't do much to make me happy with the company. I feel like I was cheated.
Anyhow, thanks to the folks who helped solve the problem for me.
Duane, is there any information you could give me about opening the case to check to see if the board is not installed properly or is loose? I'm looking specifically for any warnings about things I should avoid doing.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Bad Powerbook Purchase

    Hello,
I've made a very bad Apple purchase. About 3-weeks ago I purchased a refurbished Powerbook G4 1.67 (HighRes) from the online Apple refurbished store for 1,599. The day I received the Powerbook it had the famous horizontal line issue. So I sent the Powerbook in for repairs via AppleCare. My first attempt was unsuccessful, they couldn't "recreate" the problem.
That day the Apple refurbished site showed a MacBook Pro for $100 more then I paid a week ago for this unit. So I said to myself.. instead of attempting another repair, maybe I should attempt on getting my money back. So I kindly asked the AppleCare rep on the phone line if that would be possible. He said sure - since I was still within my return time. But a few minutes later my call was transferred to some other support lady. She basically said I wouldn't be able to return my mac since it has already been in for repairs. So at that point I was stressed out and said okay to another repair.
Luckily my display has been fully replaced with a working model. But now I feel I've chipped out of money. I paid $1,599 for a refurbished Powerbook G4 that has been in for 2 repairs. Then a week after I purchased this computer, Apple puts up a MacBook Pro for $100 more. I've paid so much for already aged technology. To top the icing on the cake, I also paid hefty sales tax fee and wasn't "qualified" for the iLife 06 update.
I'm a student and a Apple zealot. I would try selling the Powerbook on ebay. But from what I can tell its worth about nothing. It wouldn't be wise for me to loose $400-500 for a 3-week new computer. If Kevin Rose (Diggnation PodCast Host) can get a MacBook Pro for a 5 months old Powerbook for free, why can't I get a MacBook Pro or my money back or even a update iLife 06 CD for my 3-week new Powerbook G4.

i just did the same thing 3 weeks ago, i bought a pb g4 15 inch 1.67 to replace an old ibook. i'm all apple since 1983 (IIe).
i contemplated the macbook pro, but i figured that i couldn't afford to replace all my software (namely adobe) for the new intel chip, plus lacking firewire 800 and s-video and modem (i travel over seas where occasionally i need dialup), etc. etc.
the only thing that sucked was that it came with '05 versions of imovie, etc. i was ****** that apple wouldn't upgrade me to iLIFE '06, even for the $10 charge they gave to people who bought new computers...i bought this end of march, which even though it was a refurb, essentially it was a '06 computer.
apple definitely lost more money based on the bad publicity they're gonna get from me than they percentage of the $80 retail they would have made off of me for the upgrade.
but in the end, i'm happier with the latest 'old' machine than to be a guinea pig for the bottom end of the next generation. you can sell your pb and upgrade in a year or two when things get up to speed.
...although front row/remote and the built in i-sight are real spiffy...

  • Will a g4 17" powerbook purchased new n 2006 accept a SATA less than 500 GB HDD

I have a 17"G4 powerbook lap top purchased new in 2006. The HDD just went on a walkabout. I want to knowifthe puter willl accept a SATA less than 500GB 7200 rpm HDD replacement. If so what bits and pieces would I need to effect such an upgrade?

This is what you are stuck with in the G4.
    Hard Drive Interface
    Ultra ATA/100 (ATA-6)
Links to this kind of drive. Or try google and Amazon (2.5 ATA hard drive). There isn't as much choice as these have not been OEM equiped for several years. I bought a spare for my G4 12" some time ago just in case I would need it. Finding a SCSI drive is even more challenging

  • Does the Ethernet Cable Matter

I noticed they have an ethernet cable in the apple Store.  My current one is shot, lost the latch that keeps it from coming out, and is twisted every which way.  Does it matter what ethernrt cable one uses fro the MBP regarding the connection?  I see they sell one that is not called an "ethernet" cable, but would it do any good for my connection is I purchased something like this or are ethernet cables CAT5 just the same as the next?

What would I look for at Monoprice?...I do not have a gigabyte network so I just need a regular ethernet cable. I beleive this cable delivers a very high performance for a CAT 6 Ethernet cabe.
My post had a Web link in the text where it says "a cable just as good..." Click that and it goes straight to the 7 foot cable.
As far as not needing Gigabit, when prices are this low, I don't see why not just get the best so you don't have to buy it over again later.

OK. Maybe you don't need a few more cables then. I'm always connecting stuff, like external drives and printers and things, and I already have a couple of Ethernet cables with broken connectors so spares are nice.

  • Does type of Memory matter in a Mac?

I have a 1GB MacBook on it's way, and I was wondering, what if I we're to want to upgrade something to 2GB or even 4GB? Does it matter which brand of RAM you install, or does Apple RAM itself perform better on Mac's?

    jay84h wrote:
If there is no Apple RAM, than what is this? http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/canadastore.woa/wa/RSLID?nclm=1 977F78C
That's RAM that Apple has purchased from a supplier. Apple (like most computer makers) buys from "1st tier" memory manufacturers like Samsung, Micron, Hynix, Elpida, Qiomonda, or Nanya. That will typically be a module that is labelled by and has ICs identifying them as made by one of these manufacturers. For example, the 2 512 MB modules that came in my MacBook have ICs with the Hynix logo and a specific Hynix label on the module. This would be opposed to something like a Kingston memory module with (for example) Micron-identified ICs, a 3rd party circuit board, and a Kingston ID/warranty label.
I believe that Apple sold RAM carries their standard 1 year accessory warranty and/or would be covered under AppleCare if you have it. Most 3rd party memory is either warranted by the manufacturer (like Crucial) or seller (i.e. OWC buys modules, slaps their own label on them, and provides their own warranty).
If you insist on getting modules similar to what Apple buys, Crucial typically sells Micron (as their retail division) and some retailers have fully-branded Samsung modules. Most of the other 1st tier memory manufacturers don't seem to sell a whole lot that ends up in direct retail channels. They seem to prefer selling their modules directly to OEMs and their ICs to memory assemblers (Kingston for example).

  • PowerBook G4 does not see optical drive in System Profiler

    I have a very strange situation in a powerbook G4 (1.67ghz, hi-res 15" screen).
I bought the laptop non-working, installed a new power board (plug on old one was fried!) Installed a 250gb HD which I had installed OSX on in another G4 laptop, and it booted up fine, or so I thought.
When I put in my Leopard install DVD to install over the existing 10.4 Tiger, the disc spun up, but would not mount - would not eject - and when I checked the System Profiler the superdrive was not recognized by the powerbook as being present on the ATA bus. The hard drive, of course, was seen on the ATA bus.
I thought the superdrive was bum, so I installed a known-working combo drive I had around from a previously parted laptop (Apple branded) and experienced EXACTLY the same situation.
Other things I have tried included using jumpers to manually set the hard drive to slave and cable select (from the factory, with no jumpers, it is set to master), thinking that perhaps the optical drive was somehow seen as master or cable select. All possible jumper settings I tried made no difference.
Booting from external firewire hard drive shows exactly the same situation on the ATA bus, EXCEPT (and this is where it gets just weird enough to pique my curiosity and keep me trying to fix it) - When I boot from the external drive WITHOUT AN INTERNAL DRIVE installed, the SUPERDRIVE SHOWS UP ON THE ATA BUS of the System Profiler! I have not yet seen both at the same time, but I can get one or the other to show, depending on, apparently, the presence of the internal hard drive.
Am I missing something here, or am I to assume a fault in the IDE controller of the logic board?
I have never seen this laptop working properly, but the seller I acquired it from stated that the optical drive worked fine until he fried the DC in-board, presumably with a faulty power supply. He had removed his hard drive to save the data on it.
Thanks for any help or clues that anyone might provide.
See another post with similar situation (archived, or I would have jumped on that thread):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1862129&tstart=0
    Ray

Well, I am happy to report that the situation is resolved with my powerbook not seeing the superdrive, but I still do not really understand exactly why it was unavailable in the system profiler as I originally posted.
My particular solution was to wipe out (erase) the hard drive, zapped PMU, zapped PRAM, did the reset-nvram in open firmware, rechecked to make CERTAIN the proper cables were installed properly, and Now I just completed a fresh install of Leopard from the previously recalcitrant superdrive, to the now-clean hard drive.
My BEST GUESS as to what was wrong with the situation from the outset may have had something to do with where the hard drive came from and how that operating system was installed. (the OS was on the HD when I installed it) In hindsight, perhaps doing all the resets, as well as repairing permissions MIGHT have done it, but I got caught up in thinking it might be cables or something.
So, I would advise others with a similar problem to:
    repair the hard drive
repair permissions on the hard drive
    reset PMU
    reset PRAM
boot to open firmware (hold command-option-o-f at boot) and type "reset-nvram" (without quotes) enter, the type "set-default" enter, then type "reset-all" enter
cross your fingers, knock on wood, and boot! See what happens....
if no glory, THEN look at cables (make certain they are the CORRECT cables and that they are seated properly) I bought a hard drive cable and an optical cable from ebay sellers with assurance that they were the proper cables, and NEITHER had the same part number as the original cable which I suspected faulty, and that in the end are actually GOOD! GO BY PART NUMBERS! do not accept someone elses assurance that their cable is the proper one!
then suspect faulty optical drive - if possible swap another drive in and check.
if a second optical fails, then SUSPECT logicboard, but before you invest in a new logic board ($$$$$) try putting a freshly erased HD in and just see if that helps.
good luck to you all with your mac troubleshooting!
and thanks to all who read and pondered....
I will mark this case "answered" though it is more closed than truly answered.
I am very relieved that the fault did not lie in any of the major components (or even the minor ones for that matter)
It turned out to be only software/installation/settings, even though the symptoms certainly seemed to point to a hardware issue. It pays to try the resets and repairs!

I am getting the following message during attempted install of Photoshop Elements 8 for my Mac PowerBook G4 (OS 10.4.11):
"This product does not support PowerPC architecture CPU. Please upgrade or adjust your system to meet these requirements."

Searching Adobe help has turned up nada, any thoughts out there?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Laura,
I guess you must have missed something or misinterpreted something. Please check the requirements mentioned on the web page: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelmac/systemreqs/
which clearly says that it needs an  Intel® processor which means an iMac machine, Mac PPC are not supported in PSE 8 anymore.

  • What does where 1=1 mean in sql code

I am going throough someones sql code and they have used where 1=1 in alot of places what is this for... it doesnt make sense to me...

"create table emp1 as select * from emp where 1=1"
While your statement that this will create a copy of the emp table is true, the predicate is meaningless.
    CREATE TABLE emp1 AS
SELECT * FROM empwill do the exact same thing with less typing.
    Puppethead
The same argument applies to your use of the predicate in development. WHERE 1 = 1 does not change the meaning of the query, no matter how many other predicates you add or remove from the query. The result of the query will be governed by the meaningful predicates in the WHERE clause.
WHERE 1 = 1 is noise, and is ignored by the optimizer.
SQL> EXPLAIN PLAN SET statement_id = 'john' for

  • If battery is in palce Powerbook G4 does not start

    Hello,
I just had to change to AC adapter/recharger
Now my Powerbook G4 1.67 dual lawyer
will not start if a battery is in its compartment
tha fan goes wild for a minute of so then it shuts down
However, if no battery in the compartment, and plugged in with the CA Adapter/recharger
    it works just fine
I have tried 3 batteries, and all give the same problem
I ran Hardware test, and all is fine
I reset the PRAM (while no battery in compartment) and I reset the PMU
    Still no results, same problem
    any ideas ?

The Apple hardware test doesn't test the charging circuit, so you need to debug it based on what's happening with the system. When it tries to start, with the battery in, the fans go crazy, and it shuts down sounds like a logic board issue. The fact that you tried 3 batteries with the same results doesn't leave alot of things to look at. There are 4 components, maybe 4.5 components to the charging circuit: power adapter, DC-in card, battery and logic card. Some suggest the PRAM battery should also be considered. So, adapter is new and runs the system without battery. That means DC-in card is working. 3 batteries don't work. All sort of points to logic board.
If the system is working on power, and you put it to sleep, with the white LED pulsating ... if you disconnect the power does the light continue to pulsate? If not, replace the PRAM battery (www.macsales.com has new PRAM batteries for some models). Then re-evaluate if it will run with battery. If not, then run only on power, or replace logic board.
