One of the best

Well I consider myself an "Intermediate" Linux user. I appreciate the Open-Source nature of linux and how most of the things are free and donations suffice. I appreciate the fact I don't spend a few hundred dollars to get an OS and Office Suite (I could have abbreviated that as well but we can imagine the confusion). I recently moved from RHL based distros to Arch by a recommendation of an internet acquaintance. He was an avid LFS user for quite sometime and was using Pacman, he realized that he simply built a system mirroring Arch. I was always dabbling in LFS while running Fedora as my main distro (As well as a current Windows dual boot for gaming reasons). So after he made the switch and bragged for a while I decided to burn my ~ to a CD and jump on the Arch bandwagon. Now heres where my story really begins.
I was pleasantly greeted with a down to earth text installer which I found quite easy to use and partition and install the boot loader (Grub by the way). I then got to my command prompt, which sparked a bit of fear for a moment because as a Fedora user I was used to being greeted by a wonderful GDM login screen. So I jumped on my Windows partition and I asked him what to do next, he told me it all had to be installed manually. That sold me, the fact that *I* controlled the packages right then and there from a base system brought a certain joy to me, of not bloating my ever precious system. I then dug around read the man for pacman and I -Ss'd for the xorg and gnome stuff. I installed what I want then I installed my video drivers, configured X and fglrx all in under 30 minutes of download/install/configuration. I'm getting ahead of myself though actually, I should mention I had a wireless card, Microsofts MN-510, which I still use today simply because I cant afford to upgrade. Now unlike other distros it was painfully hard to setup this particular network card. Not arch's fault though, as ndiswrapper was installed and ready to go, but I had a hard time locating the drivers for the card. Well I got it installed and then proceeded to get Gnome up and fully running. Then I was greeted by a less attractive, but very friendly GDM login screen. I then proceeded to click the internet icon, which is Epiphany. Only to find out my network was no longer working, so I tried the lwconfig to find out wireless extensions for wlan0 were not present. So during my install I found a slight flaw of a minor version change in the kernel happened in my gnome installation and the module for ndiswrapper was no longer present. I simply fixed it by moving the modules folder over to the new kernel folder (I cant remember exact paths, sue me). Did a reboot and it all ran fine again, but a slight annoyance none the less. After I moaned and complained about it I remembered that Arch Linux isnt even version 1 yet. So I chalked it up to pre-gold bugs as it was easily fixed. I then proceeded to install all my favorite software via pacman and aur and I have a gorgeous system running using less then 200 megs of my ram.
Small hiccups aside, I'm very pleased with my Arch install. I will be recommending this distro to all the Linux enthusiasts I know, simply because it has a similar principal as Gentoo - you control everything. I appreciate the hard work and dedicated the development team has given to this project and I consider Arch to be a better overall choice to RHL flavors, as well as the Debian flavors (I have always disliked debians package manager). I would rate this distro in its current form to be a C+, your above average, but more work needs to be done. Please Arch developers keep the system unbloated and do not ship it with a window manager - ever. You have won the hearts of Linux enthusiasts everywhere with your approach to packaged linux distros.
Some technical specs of my install and grades on everything.
Hardware Support - B+ (ndiswrapper problem)
Software Available - A (aur and pacman are amazing)
Ease of Install - A (Flawless after I figured out I had to install gnome manually)
Verbose Configs - A (Everything was labeled correctly, and I like your rc.conf)
My System
AMD Athlon X2 5000+ Dual Core
2 Gigs DDR2 5400
250 GB SATA150 HD
DVD+/- R/W Combo Drive
ATI x1300 256mb Video Card
Logitech G15 Gamers Keyboard
Microsoft MN-510 USB Wi-Fi Card
Microsoft InteliPoint Mouse
Native 1440x900 Wide screen monitor
To anyone thinking about using Arch, I recommend it as there is a fuller and richer rewarding experience when your finished.

Interesting post, I enjoyed it.
However, keep in mind, Arch is not Fedora. It is not Red-Hat-esque, not newbie-friendly, nor will it ever aim to be so.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way
The way Arch does things is different in that it strives to use the most elegant and simple methodology. Note that simple does not mean "user-friendly", it means just that, simple. System configuration is left entirely up to the user. There are no GUI configuration tools; system resource controls are handled through configuration files and from the command line. This is unlikely to change.
What you may see as unfinished or raw, is actually the way Arch devs and users prefer the system to be, so your assumption that Arch has not reached version 1.0 is not quite accurate in this sense.
"It is what you make it." In other words, you build it, but it won't hold your hand along the way.
Take advantage of the excellent documentation in the wiki (especially the beginner's guide) and the community. When you adopt the Arch way of doing things, I am sure your C+ rating will go up, as you will have gained the knowledge of how truly elegant and powerful Arch can be.
Welcome to Arch!

i,m looking for handsfree for iphone 4s, which one is the best for it

I really like the Plantronics Voyager Pro bluetooth headset.  I have tried a lot of the ones on the market and the Plantronics one that I now use has - a long battery life, excellent sound quality and very low background noise. I occasionally use it when in a vehicle (although I do try to avoid doing this) and people on the other end of the line don't even realise that I am in a car.

  • Which one is the best practice!!

    hi all,
i have one doubt with the lov
can we show the data in the LOV by decode function or its better to write two LOV's based on the condition.
which one is the best practice.
right now i am using decode function. according to the condition the data will come in the LOV.
    Thanks..

can we show the data in the LOV by decode functionAs you already do, you can.
its better to write two LOV's based on the condition. It depends. If its a complex lov and only one column varies based onsome condition, it might less work to use just one lov. Personally, i prefer two different lov's

  • Which one is the best way in migration from sap bpc ms 5.1 to nw7.5

    Hi,
I am doing Migration project from SAP BPC MS to NW.
In this which one is the best way migrating By manually or By using SAP Migration tool.
What are the merits and demarits migrating by manually.
The data is moving from MS to NW as it is by using sap migration tool.
Could you please answer my questions as early as possible.

    Hi,
You would need manual effort anyways. Some of the objects are not either migrated or you need to update manually after the migration. Example, reports have to be modifed and as they may not work due to some of the options.
Also your packages, script logic etc have to recreated. So its upto you as the migration toosl takes across your appset, applications, dimensions and the master data etc. The manual involvement is inevitable. You need to probably take what the tool allows you to do and make manual corrections for the objects that are not supported.
    Thanks,

  • Which one is the best way to collect config and performance details in azure

    Hi ,
I want to collect the information of both configuration and performance of cloud, virtual machine and web role .I am going to collect all these details using
java.  so Please suggest which one is the best way.
    1) REST API
    2) Azure SDK for java

    Hi,
There are four main tasks to use Azure Diagnostics:
    Setup WAD
    Configuring data collection
    Instrumenting your code
    Viewing data
The original Azure SDK 1.0 included functionality to collect diagnostics and store them in Azure storage collectively known as Azure Diagnostics (WAD). This software, built upon the Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) framework, fulfills two design requirements
    introduced by Azure scale-out architecture:
Save diagnostic data that would be lost during a reimaging of the instance..
Provide a central repository for diagnostics from multiple instances.
After including Azure Diagnostics in the role (ServiceConfiguration.cscfg and ServiceDefinition.csdef), WAD collects diagnostic data from all the instances of that particular role. The diagnostic data can be used for debugging and troubleshooting, measuring
performance, monitoring resource usage, traffic analysis and capacity planning, and auditing. Transfers to Azure storage account for persistence can either be scheduled or on-demand.
To know more about Azure Diagnostics, please refer to the below article ( Section : Designing More Supportable Azure Services > Azure Diagnostics )

  • BCS Data Model (which one is the best)

    Hi,
We are implementing SEM-BCS 6.0 with SAP BI 7.0.
We have 2 possibilities for a data model and we need help to decide which one is the best.
    The first possibility is:
    1)       SAP ECC 6.0:
    a.      Define 2 (two) charts of accounts (company chart of accounts and consolidation chart of accounts) that are mapped/linked in transaction FSP0;
    b.      Define Balance and an Income Statement hierarchy for the group/consolidation chart of accounts;
    2)       BW (BI 7.0)
    a.      In BW we also have both charts of accounts, with a Balance and an Income Statement hierarchy for the group/consolidation chart of accounts. These ones were replicated from source system SAP ECC;
    3)       SEM-BCS 6.0
    a.      IN BCS we update the Financial Statement Item automatically based on/equal to consolidation chart of accounts (and not based on Balance and Income statement);
    b.      For reporting issues, we will define BW workbooks,  based on the Group Balance and Income statement,  for Consolidation reporting. In resume, we will have the Balance and an Income Statement hierarchy for the group/consolidation chart of accounts, created in SAP ECC, replicated in BW in order to report consolidated data.
    The second possibility:
    1)       SAP ECC 6.0:
In R3 we only have the company chart of accounts. For consolidation purposes  we will define a Balance and an Income statement item hierarchies, one for legal report and the second one for management report, which the superior nodes (items) are the aggregation of G/L Accounts (below nodes).
    2)       BW (BI 7.0)
In BW we will replicate the Balance and Income Statement that was created in SAP ECC.
    3)       SEM-BCS 6.0
In BCS we would have to:
                                                      i.      Create automatically the Financial Statement Item, based on the items of Balance and an Income Statement hierarchies, which would be a concatenate of the two item hierarchies.
                                                     Or
ii.      Create 2 Financial Statement Items, where which one would depend on the balance or the income statement hierarchy.
Which of the possibilities is the best?
Having 2 charts of accounts (company and consolidation) or just have one chart of accounts (company) and have a balance item hierarchy consolidated and create the financial statement item in BCS having this hierarchy in account and not a consolidation chart of accounts?
In our opinion the first scenario is the best one, because is seem to be more flexible and as we have the intention to use SEM BPS in the next year, for budget purpose. Furthermore, we think that with the first scenario we can have a FS Chart of accounts (in BCS) that is not dependent of reporting purposes (based on Balance and Income statements).
    Is this interpretation correct?
    Thanks

    Hi Ricardo,
Yes, The first one is the best choice and it is the way to work.
SAP has given some How-to documents, which are available in service market place. These documents also suggest almost same path as first choice.
    Thanks

I agree with Ralph. It all depends on what you're comfortable reading on.
Most retailers have demo devices, go to a store and play with them and see which one works best for you

    I'm a university student .

They can both read PDFs. It will really boil down to what screen size you prefer and how portable you want it. The iPad Air has a larger screen, but weighs more than the iPad Mini2. Either one will work for you, its just a matter of preference.
    Hope this helps!

  • Why are there 2 'after effects', 14 and regular and which one is the best use? It seems a little crazy to use twice the storeage for the same program?

I up graded adobe cc last night and the cc app down loaded up-grades to my original cc apps, plus another app of each labeled 14. Why do we need two copies of the same app on our machines, and which one is the best to use. I hope adobe in not going down the same road as apple and screwing up the works. i still remember way back when adobe goofed it so bad I switched to final cut. Now apple has screwed up final cut and I am back to Premiere. I know we have huge drives now, but come on, why two bit eating monsters that do the same thing. Stan / Desert Wind Productions.

The "2014" versions are new versions of the software. It's like the difference between CS5 and CS6. The new one is (most of the time) significantly better. This isn't any weird screwup, it's just a new version.
You may want to keep the old version around for compatibility, client needs, safety, etc. However, it probably behooves you to use the current version for all of its new features, etc.

  • According Too  C.R. The Maxx on Verizon Was Rated one of the Best.!

I just received my Aug. Consumer Reports and according to there Test the Maxx was Rated as one of the Best To see there Report Look in the Mail if you get the Magazine or have a Look on there Web Site..

I try to convince alot of people to buy the RAZR MAXX just because of the battery life and the amazing 4g speed it has. 299$ is alot to pay for a phone yes, but you're buying the phone for two years, which means you don't need to buy another phone for another 2 years, that's  12$ a month, plus service on it of course. I do agree though, best phone on market We can't even Manager approve those phones still they're still hot!

  • Which one is the best approach for responsive UI development option in SharePoint 2013

Which one is the best approach for responsive UI development option in SharePoint 2013
Device channel or responsive UI (HTML, CSS)?

In practice you're probably going to end up with a combination. A couple of device channels for classes of device and then responsive UI within those channels to adjust to particular devices within the classes.
Of course the real answer is as always 'it depends' as you'll need to pick the best option for each client based on their needs.

  • What's one of the best mp3 playe

I was wondering, in other peoples opinions what the best or their favorite mp3 player out is regardless of price. I had the 8 gig ipod nano, not the one with video the one before it, and the sound quality?was lacking. Sound quality is an importrant factor?for me, i know my headphones werent the problem i own a pair of ultimate ears superfi 5 studio earbud headphones that ran me $250.

Well, the "best" mp3 player I have is my PC with a high-end sound card and matching speakers. Okay, since you asked in this forum, I suppose you were talking about the portable mp3 players (lugging my PC around ain't an option). I have the Zen V Plus and am very happy with it. I generally play the music through my car stereo ... and it sounds great on my Bose speakers!?No matter which mp3 player you buy, you probably don't want to stay with the default headphones they put in the package. I also bought a speaker system for my bedroom?that I use to listen to music while "hiding out" from the rest of the family. Although it was made to dock an iPod, it also has a USB and headphone jack that I plug into my Zen. The speakers on this unit aren't the best of quality, but they're adequate for what I use them for.

  • PE9 - One of the best products of 2010?

It seems that VideoMaker has selected Adobe Premiere Elements 9 as one of their best products of the year for 2010. Just received their email announcing the decision.
What about all the issues users are experiencing, according to this forum?

    Steven,
This is just me thinking, and I have done zero formal research into things, so please take it for what it is - just thinking.
On a product forum, we see a lot of problems. That is one of the functions of such a forum. There are seldom posters, who are experiencing no issues, who come to state such. The one exception will often be with some of the regulars, who may well post a "things really work well for me, with this product," sort of posts, or might include such in there replies to others.
Over the decades, the issues with an NLE (Non Linear Editor) program, normally sort out this way, and in this order:
    System
    Assets
    Project settings
    OE (Operator Error)
    Real Bugs in the program
Note: the above can be intertwined too.
Because an NLE stresses the computer more than about anything other than heavy-duty 3D or CAD work (most systems doing those operations are usually designed specifically for those purposes), and then in the video sub-system area, extreme gaming. Many computers are just not capable of running an NLE properly, and most are probably not set up properly for that task - some tweaking can go a very long way.
Once one gets into the process of troubleshooting, they can examine the above list, pretty much in that order, to see where the problems are. With a proper system (and a properly tuned system), most of the problems will sort out. Next, with proper Assets in a correct Project, most of the rest will sort out. Then, one must study their workflow and how they are attempting to edit - might be an issue there. Last, there will always be Bugs, and glitches, but some programs, and versions of programs ARE better than others.
Most problems presented here can be sorted out, by working through the above list. One exception is with installation issues. Most of the regulars here do not have experience with those, but many seem to. We can only read of what worked for others, and try to apply that knowledge to help others, but do hit brick walls. Some of those installation issues can only be sorted out by Adobe T/S, or C/S. We see a lot here. The majority are easily handled, because of OE, with things like trying to install the Functional Content, before the program has been installed, issues with one's browser and security settings, when downloading. Then, there are often issues with other software, such as anti-virus, pop-up blockers and spy sweepers, that interfere with the installation. Oh, and then there are the likely issues with the OS security settings, or where one is attempting to install to, and how they are trying to perform the installation.
If one eliminates every post, with problems solved from the first four items on that list, the real Bugs only comprise a very small portion of issues. That would be the list that I would draw from, when rating a program. It seems that PrE 8 had more than its share of Bugs. PrE 9, while still having some (possibly too many yet?), seems to be a much better program, and more stable on a wider array of equipment. It also seems to work better with a broader array of Assets, than its predecessors.
Remember, the above are but observations and impressions on my part. There is no scientific study behind them. Also, I do not work for Adobe, and am but a lowly user. I do not yet have PrE 9 installed, so cannot add any first-hand impressions on that front. I plan on upgrading my aged PrE 4, when I go to Win7 64 on new computers, but will tread very, very carefully, as I use PrPro (will be CS5 on those new machines), and Steve Grisetti has pointed out some issues with other Adobe apps., like Bridge, which I use often, and PrE 9. As I make my living with PrPro, PS, AI and AE, and use PrE as a supplemental tool, I cannot afford to break something like Bridge, or to have a clean machine (no other Adobe programs), just for PrE. That said, I might be no better at doing a full review of PrE 9, if it DOES get in the way of my Adobe Master Collection. If I can do that review, I only hope that it will support the findings of VideoMaker, but until then, we will not know.
