Linux console goes crazy ("cpu pipe a fifo underrun") when Xorg quits.
Hi,
>> Short story:
When I run `startx', it works alright, it runs the `twm' window manager. When I quit twm, however, the display starts behaving like an old TV with a bad signal. I took a picture:
>> Long story:
I installed Arch on a new DELL Inspiron and, following the wiki ([1] and [2]), installed:
xorg-server
xf86-video-intel
mesa-libgl
libva-intel-driver
libva
libvdpau-va-gl
My xinitrc is ends with:
exec ~/.tdm/sessions/TWM
which in turn exec's the following script:
#!/bin/sh
twm &
xterm -fg white -bg black &
exec xmessage "Exit"
So far so good; I log in, run `startx', and when I quit the `twm' window manager, havoc starts (see the "short story" above hehe). In the above "screenshot" you can see that the display shows the console in "three times" in the same display, each of the three overlapping each other, and all of them blurry, etc. But I can still type, and everything appears to be working alright, except for the display. Sometimes, when the display stops blinking for a second, I can read the kernel message invading my bash prompt:
[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun
Changing virtual terminals doesn't work. If I ssh into the computer, it all seems calm, it all works, and when I run `journalctl -xe', I can read clearly the same kernel message above.
I have tested both the default kernel, and the `linux-lts' kernel, and I can reproduce the above in both of them (both always boot in UEFI mode, with Intel Microcode properly loaded). Both the cpu and the graphics card are Intel. Here's some info:
[smt-dell ~]$ uname -a
Linux smt-dell 4.0.4-2-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri May 22 03:05:23 UTC 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[smt-dell ~]$ lspci |grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics (rev 09)
I have absolutely no idea what this bizarre behaviour could mean, or what package could be acting poorly. Does anyone have the slightest idea?
Thanks

Solved. It was just a matter of following the recommendation that was given when I installed the video driver `xf86-video-intel':
This driver uses SNA as the default acceleration method. You can try
falling back to UXA if you run into trouble. To do so, save a file with
the following content as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf :
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
#Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
EndSection

My Finder is going crazy. Keep getting a message saying it quit unexpectedly and asking if I want to restore windows, but I can't get it to stop. buttons don't work.
Something else you can try.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Terminal.
chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates. -

CPU Fan going crazy (over 3500 rpm) all the time iMac 24"
Hello,
I have had an iMac 24" since Aug 2009. I had no problem until up a month ago (coincidentally after I installed Mountain Lion).
The CPU fan becomes very noisy, reaching 3500 rpm and more. I checked and the CPU temperature is around 90C when this happens.
It happens invariably after very little usage of the computer. Sometimes it's when I'm watching a DVD, sometimes is when I'm copying files from a USB hard drive, sometimes I'm just surfing the web.
I have brought my computer to the Apple Store twice already. The first time they told me I should reinstall the OS from scratch, after erasing the disk (which I did), the second time they told me they had found the problem and fixed it, for free! but it presented itself as soon as I turned it on back home.
The CPU temperature is around 80C right now, and I only have safari opened and I haven't reinstalled any program since I reinstalled the OS.
Do you have any idea of what it could be? Could it be that the sensor is detecting a wrong temperature? In this case, could I set the fan speed manually? I know it is not advisable, but the people from the apple store are not helping
Thanks for any help you could give me,
BiagioPlease start by doing a SMC Reset,
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If necessary repeat process. -
FIFO Underruns in newer versions of Linux using the Ivy Bridge cpus
I have been getting consistent results from my Lenovo Z580 where an error will apear when upgrading to a newer version of linux past 3.15.8. More specifically a "[drm:cpt_serr_int_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun". This also includes transcoder B.
I found the bug report https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/40952?p … sort2=desc which near to the bottom of the page someone has stated building the kernel from git fixes the issue. There was aslo some reports on updating the bios to solve the issue but on the bios I have is current based on the lenovo support site http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product … s/DS100928.

I've tested all the kernels > 3.15.8 but they seem to create the error above. My questions are
Was there a change in the linux kernel options from 3.15.8?
Am I using / missing a module that I shouldn't / should be using for my cpu?
Last edited by acothi (2014-10-06 02:49:39)Hi acothi,
I was getting the same error message for months. Linux kernel 3.16.3-1 finally fixed it for me. My system: Intel Ivy-Bridge i5-3570K CPU + Intel DH77DF Mobo with latest BIOS (dated 2013). Please update to latest kernel in [Core] and report back. However, I don't think that your SD card slot issues are directly related to this error message. I also recommend installing linux-lts kernel and adding a bootloader entry, so you can still be productive, even if the latest Linux kernel doesn't fix it for you.
Afaik, this error has nothing to do with kernel options, but was introduced by a usual kernel commit (and seems to be fixed upstream).
Cheers,
Tolga

Kernel 2.6.32-ARCH slows down and syslog-ng goes crazy *
Hi, it's a month now that randomly my computer slows down.
I took a look with "iotop" and found that syslog-ng was going crazy writing continuosly to the logfile.
taking a look at these files i found this message that gets written over and over again:
ACPI: EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction
ACPI Exception: AE_TIME, Returned by Handler for [EmbeddedControl] (20090903/evregion-424)
ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.AMW0.WMCA] (Node ffff8800bf4182c0), AE_TIME
here is my computer info
2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Any ideas on what's causing this error??

Mac Os 10.6.6 update start the fans goes crazy
Hi to all
Some months ago (almost a year from now) my mac start to become hot after only a few minutes it started up and the fan goes crazy but I never realize why. I made some search on the internet but the only answer I found was using some software to reduce fan speed. It didn't work. I run the Hardware test but nothing strange. I also took my macbook to an apple certified repair center but they told me that nothing was wrong. I also ask to another repair center but same thing. So I left my macbook as it was with this super fan noise all the time. A quite disturbing thing but there was no solution and for what I'm doing my machine is ok so why change it? (It was the only solution they gave me)
Last day my hd broke down so I had to replace it. I took my macbook pro a1211 model to an apple repair center they change the hd with a new one.
So I reinstall everything for the beginning. I took my snow leopard dvd formatted the new hd, installed the os, iWork 2008, iLife 2008, Mamp, CSS Edit, Espresso, Pixelmator and few other application such as Firefox, Camino, Etc...
I use the macbook with mac os 10.6, because I had to finish some work, and with my big surprise for two days the machine was super silent no fans, no hot body ..... nothing. I never reboot it and still no fans and hot body wow.
Today I wanted to install the developer kit with ios 4.2 and so I had to update the Mac os x to version 10.6.6 as soon as I made the update after the reboot the fans start again to go like crazy and after 15 minutes of work the macbook body become very hot.
The question is why?
Anyone can help me?
Thanks in advance
GianfrancoHI R C-R.
The apps i've installed are just a few. Espresso, CSS Edit, MAMP, TextWrangler,Firefox, Camino, Chrome, Opera,BetterZip, Stuffit Expander, Pixelmator, 1Password, Dropbox, Xslimmer, VLC, CyberDuck, littlesnitch, iworks, iLife, wacom tablet driver.
Nothing more. All the software is updated.
Here the data but as you can see nothing strange but fans are on at the maximum speed!

Tmux/DVTM on UTF-8 Linux Console Output Incorrect Line Drawing Glyphs
I have the Linux Console set to UTF-8 with (usually) the Terminus font. As a side note, I use SystemD for init, which could be a contributing factor to my problem.
When I run Tmux on the Linux Console, and split the screen, rather than nice crisp lines, I get weird glyphs. Setting LANG to en_US.ISO-8859-1 seems to fix this problem, but I don't understand why... DTVM exhibits the same behavior.
Any ideas of what is going on?So, did you find a solution for this one? For some reason I just ran into the same problem without knowing excactly why.. it has been working just fine for years. How can I change it so that I'm using e.g only en_US.UTF-8 like bernarcher wrote? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I'm pretty new in Linux and JAVA, so I hope, I'm in the right part of the forum for my question.
When I write java code in an IDE like eclipse and press the debug button, I get a detailed error message about what is going wrong. But when I try debug the same program on a linux console (Ubuntu with JRE and JDK installed (1.6) I just get one line with:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: SqlConnect/class
Is there any possibiltiy to enable a more detailed error traceback on the console?
Thanks a lot.I mean, what packages should I install?
Is it possible to use only "apt-get install" or I should also use "dpkg"?
Is it possible to avoid using any guid interfaces because it is headless pc?
I'm asking because I successfully use openvpn connection in console and I hope that cisco vpn is also possible here.
Thanks for your attention and best regards! -
[SOLVED] Linux Console / Terminus Startup Unicode Issues
Hello!
So I'm using the Linux Console (the kernel one, not really sure if this thing is going to get a window manager) and I've set it up to use Terminus as the default font.
/etc/vconsole.conf:
FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
With this, on bootup, the font does change (so I know it's not that kernel hook that I always forget to put in ), but Unicode characters don't display properly. This wouldn't be a huge deal, but it really messes with ncurses.
The odd part: if I do a
setfont Lat2-Terminus16
Then the font doesn't seem to change a bit, but now Unicode works fine. I suspect it's something going on with the font map or the unicode mapping, but I can't figure out any way to actually print out, e.g., where my unicode mapping is coming from.
I'm willing to post any log files you need. Also, not 100% sure newbie corner is the place for this, but none of the other ones seemed to be any more appropriate, and this is definitely making me feel like a newbie . Mods, if this seems grossly inappropriate, feel free to move it.
EDIT: it was indeed not having KMS loaded early enough. Thanks, all!
Last edited by arek_menner (2013-11-17 17:27:20)karol wrote:Post your /etc/vconsole.conf. You can set font map there.
What's the output of 'localectl'?
My vconsole.conf is up there. Sorry, I should have made it more clear that that's what it was. It is, exactly, the one line:
FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
I remember trying to put a FONT_MAP in there, and it didn't help (although I don't know which one the correct mapping would be). I don't specify a font map when I do the bare 'setfont' once the system has already booted. That sort of makes me think that Terminus has the font map in the file?
localectl output:
System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8
VC Keymap: n/a
X11 Layout: n/a
And locale's output is basically a whole bunch of "en_US.UTF-8"s.
WonderWoofy wrote:I have read somewhere that if you use the systemd-vonsole-setup.service to do anything more than the defaults, it is wise to also have early KMS setup as well. Apparently the change in font or language depends on the KMS being properly in place before it happens, and this is only guaranteed if you set up KMS in the initramfs.
I remember having a problem with that last install, but it just made the new font not show up, rather than not having Unicode support. I definitely haven't done anything regarding that this time, though, so I'll give it a try and report back to you -
Ever since installing Leopard, my Powerbook G4 (1.67 Ghz) will start going crazy with few or no apps running at all. Activity Monitor doesn't show any errant behavior, but the fans act like I have a gagillion apps open.
who knows, there may be some process that starts to ramp up the fans and then quits. I installed the latest beta of OnyX with 10.5 compatibility and within seconds of it completing my MacBook fan started to rev. What I did notice, albeit very briefly, was a process called installdb (and user '_installer') running with close to 80% of CPU.

Console.app hogs CPU while looking at console log
On my PowerBook G4 Console.app hogs the CPU when looking at the console log, but not at other logs. When switching to looking at the console log, this message is displayed:
Console[31127]: Error: failed to register for new message notifications (status code = 1000000)
Of course, the process number 31127 is not always the same. After this message appears, the app uses 60 to 70% of CPU time. Switching to another log, say system.log, CPU usage goes back down to % or less.
Of course the work-around is not to be looking at the console log. I would like to fix whatever is malfunctioning. BTW, an iMac G5, also running Leopard, does not exhibit this quirk.
TIA, Harald P.I have this same issue ... on a Mac Pro 8 core box ... Console.app takes about 80% of a CPU while looking at 'All Messages', and the same console error is in the console:
"failed to register for new message notification"
Anyone have a solution for this? -
Regarding Safari; (screen goes crazy when I press the Top Sites bottom)
Regarding Safari; When I open safari everything works fine, but when I press the top sites bottom, the screen goes crazy for a second and then goes to the top sites. It is not fading or dimming from one screen to the other like it use to do. any sugestions. Thanks
Nope, it isn't normal, but I don't know the cause. You might have better luck posting in the Safari forum:

My macbook seems to be going crazy. At certain points (and for hours) I get the oh snap page on chrome, safari doesnt work, macbook wont let me create any files or for example upload music to itunes. I restored my mac so im sure its not a malware problem. The only thing that solves it is switching off and on , but sometimes I have to do that for 6-7 times before its ok or wait for a few hours. Some help please
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
