Drive in lvm set pre-fail
Need to get everything off and _soon_. According to S.M.A.R.T. anyhow.
How to go about removing the bad drive (/dev/sdb) from the volume group?
Have two physical volumes (/dev/sda4 and /dev/sdb) in a volume group.
Have one logical volume taking up the entire 2.79TiB space.
I had originally only had it only on /dev/sda4, then I did pvcreate on sdb and added it to the volume group, resized the logical volume, then resized the partition. I rebooted not long after for a kernel update (relatively new install on new system, but old(er) drives). Upon this reboot I saw a lovely SMART error. telling me that the drive was failing.
Physically speaking, all of the files should still be physically be on /dev/sda4 right?
Umm, I can still mount everything.
I'd like to just remove the bad drive from the group and add a new drive later because that should be easier than backing up everything, taking out the bad drive, redoing sda4, and such.
Anyhow, please advise.

"Pre-Fail" is a type of statistic collected under SMART, it does not imply the drive is failing.
You should check the "man" page at http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/man/smartctl.8.html#index to see further details.
Since the drive has been up for only 19 hours, it should work well. The OWC warranty is https://eshop.macsales.com/service/warranty_info.cfm.
If it is a very old drive, but has been recently put in service, it should still provide good service. OWC is usually very good about warranty. You should maintain good backups for critical data, including an on-site and off-site backup, if you can.

How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one
Last Friday apparently one of my raid drives started failing.
As I mentioned on this forum I started getting continous beeping.
I was finally able to get the raid working at a degraded level. I ordered a replacement hard drive which is arriving today.
(In the meantime I made twice daily backups of my work.....)
Below was the message I got from the browser based raid software:
Blahblah 09 1000.2GB RaidSet Member SamSung HD103SJ
Blahblah 10 1000.2GB Free SamSung HD103SJ
Blahblah 11 1000.2GB RaidSet Member SamSung HD103SJ
Blahblah 12 1000.2GB RaidSet Member SamSung HD103SJ
(See this earlier thread if you wish!)
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/727867?tstart=0
At one point when I did the checked the browser interface I saw the message Failed and Degraded
As I said, I was able to work over the weekend on the degraded system.
This morning I got the beeping again and did the rescue and now I am running a "full raid" without the notice that one raid was "Free".
In any case, the new hard drive is arriving today.
What steps should I take to incorporate the new drive into the raid system.
I have one OS drive
and 4 tb raid drives. One needs to be replaced with the new one that I am getting today.
Thanks
RowbyHarm,
Regarding your comment:
Re: How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one
Please tell me how to read the serial number from an individual drive rather easily, without un-installing them:
If you select the proper drive to change out, you only need to remove one drive and look at its serial number...
Step 1: Identify bad drive serial number using Areca's tools
Step 2: Turn off the computer
Step 3: Remove what you think is the bad drive based on following your numbered cable method, marked hot-swap bays, whatever
Step 4: Verify that the serial number matches the "bad drive" serial number from step 1; if it does great, proceed; if it does not match, go back to step 3
Step 5: Change out the CORRECT drive - that's the bottom line for this whole procedure
Cheers,
Jim -

UnixODBC: Driver's SQLAllocHandle on SQL_HANDLE_HENV failed
I have installed the instant client and am now getting the following error:
unixODBC: Driver's SQLAllocHandle on SQL_HANDLE_HENV failed
I googled a lot but could not find a solution. Could there be something wrong with my ENV variables?
/etc/odbcinst.ini holds:
[Oracle 10g ODBC driver]
Description = Oracle ODBC driver for Oracle 10g
Driver = /presto/instantclient_10_2/libsqora.so.10.1I looked in Oracle Metalink and there is Bug 5700995 that might or might not be what you experience:
Problem statement:
ORACLE_HOME WITH TRAILING SLASH CRASHES UNIXODBC
They report the exact same error message that you get.
There is no patch yet.
Does your ORACLE_HOME end with a slash? If yes, try without!

[SOLVED] Installing to existing LVM set up
Hi all,
I have tried looking for this and the info is getting slightly confusing. I have a system with various Linux distributions using LVM. I want to install Arch by creating a new logical volume for it, but the installer cannot even see the PV partition.
Is there a simple way on doing this, or is the installer incapable of using already existing LVM set ups?
Many thanks for any help.
Last edited by kcy29581 (2012-06-05 09:49:35)I have installed and reinstalled to LVM LVs many times and never manually loaded dm-mod. But then, I've never used the installer to manipulate LVs (I assumed it couldn't). I use the command line for everything in that regard.
Also, to get the installer to see existing LVs, you have to activate them. -
After renaming my MAC hard drive, Acrobat, Illustrator and Bridge fail to launch. Acrobat returns the error message "An internal error occurred". I've checked this out and it seems related to user permissions. The version is Acrobat X. My machine has multiple user accounts. Any help would be appreciated. I renamed the drive to its original name but to no effect. RR
I resolved the issue.
The problem is indeed a permissions issue with the Adobe Application Support folder.
First, in MAC OS Lion the ~/Library/ folder is hidden by default. You must unhide it in order to proceed. (if it is already visible in your ~/User/ folder, proceed to Step 4.)
Next launch the Terminal application.
At the command line, paste the following command line: chflags nohidden ~/Library/
Go to /Users/youruserid/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Get info on the ~/Adobe folder and reset your permissions to read/write and apply to all enclosed folders
Problem solved. RR -

The only thing you do not want to do is over-stuff the internal hard drive. The OS needs some space to operate correctly, so if your iTunes library uses up more than say 80 to 85% of the internal HD's available space it may not be a good idea to transfer it over.
With that said, the internal HD will provide slightly faster access to the library than the external would, but other than that, you can point iTunes to the external drive just fine. -
EIS Error: ODBC Error driver's SQLAllochandle on SQL_HANDLE_ENV failed
HI guys,
I had Oracle 10g(Run time Client) installed, but to create a catalog i need to create an ODBC connection first so I went ahead and tried to do it but i didnt find the ODBC driver for 10g so I installed Oracle 11g(Run time Client) over 10g. Then, I created a ODBC DSN and tried to create OLAP catalog using the ODBC DSN but it says the following error.
ODBC Error driver's SQLAllochandle on SQL_HANDLE_ENV failed
I researched a bit and found that its an environment variable issue so uninstalled the Oracle 10g, now I've got only 11g but still the same error.
When I test the connection while creating the DSN it says Connection Successfull, its only on EIS front I am getting this error
Can any of you plz help me out of this error.
Thanks!!!!

Hi Everyone.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Right off the bat let me say I am using Mavericks 10.9.1 on a 2011 Macbook Pro and using all Lacie external hard drives.
I am trying to get Time Machine to alternate between two attached external hard drives, trying to be safe in case one of the backup drives itself fails.
I have both drives set in Time Machine.
From what I gather Time Machine should by default alternate between drives when backing up (I would assume it does one big initial backup on each then subsequent backups are just changes).
But this is not how it seems to be working and I cannot find a straight answer despite much Googling and Foruming
Unfortunately it seems to only be backing up to "External Hard Drive 1".
There have been 4 backups since I set it up, all on "External Hard Drive 1", even though "External Hard Drive 2" is also attached and set in Time Machine.
I manually clicked "Back Up Now" and it started to work on "External Hard Drive 2" (like I want it to) for a minute but it appears to have stopped and gone back to backing up to "External Hard Drive 1".
Am I missing something? Does Time Machine only move on to another disk when the first one runs out of space? Do I have to turn one off in order to force it to back up to the other drive (that would be less convenient of course)?
I am hoping that I am missing something and that it will just alternate between the two. Otherwise it is not the most comforting and thorough backup system as I had hoped when I purchased the additional external hard drive.
I have a 1TB drive and a 500gig partition on another drive, both dedicated to backups (my Macbook HD is 475gig). It will take awhile for each to fill up and who knows what could happen during that time. Having Time Machine alternate between hard drives would be a nice small bit of security if the worst happened.
I realize that there are tons of other options for backing up but I just want to use Time Machine if I can.
Again thank you for your help! You cannot use Time Machine in that way. I'm not sure where you heard that Time Machine alternates between drives automatically. What you can do is create a mirrored RAID array for the backup. This automatically duplicates whatever is on one drive onto the other drive.
Both drives must be the same size, and prefereably, exactly the same make and model. RAIDs can be configured using OS X's Disk Utility.

Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
